- Ken Mackey honored as Lodi's 'Firefighter of the Year'

Ken Mackey was all of 8 years old when he began helping out at the fire department in Ione. At age 20, he was hired full-time with the city of Lodi. Now, 22 years later, Mackey is volunteer fire chief in Ione and a fire captain for the Lodi Fire Department. He was honored as Firefighter of the Year at Wednesday's City Council meeting.

Denise Kendrick, the renter at 1909 S. Euclid Ave., receives a hug Wednesday from her friend and insurance agent Heidi Swartz. "I'm glad I had renters insurance," Kendrick said. A rookie firefighter escaped injury Wednesday when he fell through the floor of a house while battling a blaze in central Sioux Falls. "I just feel fortunate to be OK," said Robert Bruns, who landed on a mattress. "Someone was looking out for me."

Investigators are searching for the cause of an overnight fire at a thrift shop in Lewes that put one firefighter in the hospital. The blaze started around 10 p.m. inside the Beach Consignment Thrift Shop located on Route 1 just south of Five Points in Lewes. Flames broke out in the basement and worked their way to the first floor. The flames did not reach the second floor, which is home to a yoga studio. However, the entire building experienced heat and smoke damage.

- Injured Pittsburg Firefighter Remains In Guarded Condition

A firefighter injured while searching a Pittsburg home after a two-alarm fire Monday remains in guarded condition at a hospital in San Pablo, the Contra Costa Fire Protection District reported Wednesday. The firefighter was in the process of searching the home at 1231 Alamo Way for possible victims when a portion of the ceiling collapsed, knocking off his helmet and facemask, said Fire Chief Richard Carpenter. Carpenter said the firefighter remains in guarded condition at Doctors Medical Center in San Pablo because upper respiratory injuries from heat and gas take a while to develop. He suffered burns to his face and head.
